Rachel Ray – Does this scarf make me look terrorist?

Terrorist Scarf?

Wow, seems Rachel Ray has had a real fashion snafu. For a recent Dunkin Donuts commercial her stylist decided to drape a scarf around Ray-Ray’s neck. Well, this scarf, for some, bears a striking resemblance to a keffiyeh, the head dress worn by Muslin men. Okay, so I’m thinking, no biggie. Hollywood borrows from other cultures for fashion all the time. But apparently it is a big deal and right wingers are flipping out. And the media has gotten in on it, adding fuel to the fire. The most out there comment so far about scarf-gate was made by Michelle Malkin a commentator for Fox news in her syndicated column:

“The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons”

Okay, apparently she feels strongly about this. But I’m sorry, she’s being a bit racist. All Arab men are not terrorists. And yes, while Arafat did popularize the keffiyeh, it does not make the head dress evil. It’s actually a sun hat used for protection from the elements.

Despite her misleading comments, or actually because of them, Dunkin Donuts received enough flack about the spot that it was pulled. Rachel Rays’ people have said that her stylist didn’t mean anything by the use of the scarf. There is also some speculation on whether or not the stylist would be let go. I don’t think she should be let go because some fundamental right wingers see terrorist symbols in everything. She should be let go because, keffiyeh or not, that’s a damn ugly scarf.
